BEAUTIFUL SCENERY

Our surroundings provide a wonderful setting for outdoor activities. Take a stroll along the three canals, admire the rapids, and the beautiful lake landscape. If you’re lucky, you might witness one of the area’s unique log drives or a fishing competition! You’ll find charming picnic spots or perhaps go on a little adventure wondering from one canal to another. Can you find the hidden shelter behind the canals?

HISTORY OF KONNUS

The first canal of Konnus was built between 1836 and 1941. The amount of traffic and ships quickly grew, and with the emergency relief work that took place during the years of famine, a larger canal was built as early as 1865-68, next to the previous one – of course! The history of Konnus is a rich one, including a regular route to Lübeck during the 1860s. Many will remember how, at the inauguration of the latest canal in 1972, a 5kg pikeperch was lifted from the water. The poor fish emerged from the canal in the propellers of ‘Esso Saimaa’ the first cargo vessel to go through! The beautiful canal area has been used for dancing, singing and local Midsummer celebrations. Konnus summer highlights continue to include both fishing and log driving.
